Director of TMU International Department Meets with Iraqi Cultural Attaché in Tehran

In a joint meeting held between the director of TMU International Unit and the cultural attaché of Iraq embassy, the ways of developing academic relations between the two countries were discussed.

At the beginning of this meeting, Dr. Shoja-al-Sadati referred to TMU’s role in the promotion of Iran’s High Education, its facilities, achievements and capabilities in special fields and said: ”we would like to offer our scientific achievements to the Iraqi students and professors. For example TMU’ Faculty of Chemical Engineering has started its academic relationship with the University of Basra for the establishment of new fields and exchange of faculty members.”

He pointed to the strategic plan of the university and said:” Based on the university’s strategic development plan, promoting international interactions is one of the main goals of the university, and in this regard, attracting foreign students is of high importance. There are possible ways to admit Iraqi students: student registration by their own personal expense, or half of the expenses by the applicant and the rest as scholarship grant.

Referring to the presence of 4000 Iraqi students at Iranian universities, Dr. Yaser Abdol Zahr, the Iraqi cultural attaché, said:” The commonalities between Iran and Iraq, in terms of cultural, geographical and value grounds, make Iraqi students choose Iran for their education despite the lower costs in some neighboring countries like Turkey.”

He acknowledged:” Tarbiat Modares University despite its numerous scientific capabilities and facilities is not well known in Iraq and it should play a more effective role in academic relations between the two countries.”

The faculty member of Basra University referred to this meeting as a turning point for joint cooperation and suggested scholarship should be granted in some special fields. He also proposed that higher education officials of Iraq visit Iranian universities’ facilities and laboratories. He also asked for the holding of joint / short-term training courses and special tuition discounts for Iraqi students”.

Referring to TMU’s scientific level and the presence of competent professors therein, Dr. Shoja-al-Sadati said: ”Tarbiat Modares University’s anonymity can be attributed to its primary mission which concerned the training of faculty members for universities and the establishment of postgraduate courses, but by promoting scientific relations and academic exchanges, it can be better known to Iraqi students”.
